What is a vapour barrier primer?

A moisture-blocking primer applied to concrete substrates before epoxy coating to prevent water vapour transmission that causes adhesion failure and surface bubbling.

Vapour barrier primer is a specialized coating layer applied directly to concrete surfaces in preparation for epoxy flooring systems. It acts as a moisture seal, preventing water vapour rising from the concrete base (especially in humid Malaysian climates) from penetrating through to the epoxy topcoat. Without this barrier, trapped moisture creates pockets of pressure under the epoxy, leading to bubbling, blistering, and eventual delamination where the coating separates from the concrete.

In Klang Valley facilities including warehouses, factories, and commercial spaces, concrete slabs absorb groundwater and atmospheric humidity. Vapour barrier primers address this by creating an impermeable layer that stops capillary rise of moisture. The primer cures to form a dense film that bonds to the concrete while providing a stable base for epoxy adhesion. This is particularly critical in areas exposed to heavy traffic, chemical exposure, or regular cleaning where coating failure can be costly and unsafe.

Most epoxy flooring contractors specify vapour barrier primer as a mandatory step in their application sequence, especially for concrete with high moisture content readings. The primer typically comes as a two-part or single-part system and must cure fully before epoxy application. Skipping or rushing this step is a common source of premature coating failure in the region.
