What is a tile leveling system?

A clip-and-wedge mechanical system that holds large-format tiles at the same height during installation to prevent uneven surfaces (lippage) between adjacent tiles.

A tile leveling system is a mechanical device designed to keep large-format tiles at consistent height during installation, preventing lippage (the visible step or ridge where two tiles meet at different levels). The system uses reusable plastic clips that grip the edges of adjacent tiles and wedges that apply downward pressure to force the tiles into perfect alignment.

The clip anchors onto the top edge of a tile while the wedge slides through the clip from the side. As the wedge is pushed further through, it gradually lowers the tiles to the exact same plane. Once tiled mortar sets, the clips and wedges are removed and reused on the next row. This method is especially important for large-format tiles (24 inches or larger on any side) because their weight and size make hand-leveling difficult and lippage more visible to the eye.

Without a leveling system, tiles naturally shift during mortar cure time, leaving uneven joints that trap dirt and look unprofessional. For tilers in the Klang Valley working on contemporary residential and commercial projects, these systems have become standard practice when installing porcelain or natural stone tiles. The investment in clips and wedges is offset by faster installation, fewer callbacks, and consistently flush surfaces that meet client expectations.
